Weekly Update
November 28, 2023
Stuff A Truck: Thank you for your generous donations to help families in our community.
Word Work: Our class will be learning about the r-controlled syllable pattern -or this week. Words that follow this pattern include corn, board, and more. Students should read their word lists, discuss the meaning of the words, and practice spelling words with similar syllable patterns. Spelling City is ready for students to access the practice list for the week.
Math: Second graders are starting Unit 3: Measuring Length. We will have opportunities to measure using inches and centimeters. Students will also relate measurements to using a number line. Our second graders continue working on mastering their addition and subtraction facts through 20.
Lexia Core 5: Lexia is a fantastic program for growing readers as it works with all aspects of the English language that build stronger readers and writers. There are 21 levels to be achieved during elementary school. As mentioned during conferences the 2nd grade levels are 10, 11, and 12. Students are given a required weekly goal of minutes and units to move them steadily through where they are currently placed. I work through the week to give them time to meet these goals. As we move into the 2nd trimester, I will begin to encouraged students who are operating at levels below 10 to access this at home and practice without parent assistance. Students can do this by going to the SJPS Symbaloo, clicking on Clever, and then on the Core 5 link. This week, I will begin offering some practice opportunities during lunchtime recess as one more way for students to meet their weekly goal. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please know we want students to learn the material, not just move through levels without retaining skills. Thank you
Science: In our new unit, Work of Water students will explore how water shapes the Earth's surface. Students construct and use models of mountains to demonstrate that water flows downhill, and in the process, transforms huge rocks into the tiny grains of sand we find at the beach. Students will also construct and use model hills to determine the causes of erosion, and to design solutions to problems caused by erosion. Please ask your child what he or she has learned this week.
*We also need a lot of volunteers that morning so please click here to see how you can help!
